PSA vs BGS vs SGC: Best Grader for Basketball Cards

PSA vs BGS vs SGC for high-end basketball cards: grading volume, scales, subgrades, Black Label and Pristine, ownership changes and which to choose.

Which grading company should you use for a high-end basketball card: PSA, Beckett (BGS) or SGC? The answer can change a card's sale price by a large margin. Each company uses a 1–10 scale, but they differ in market share, in how they handle the top grades, and in how buyers value their slabs. This guide compares them using published standards and 2024 grading-volume data, along with real record sales in each company's holders.

Market Share: PSA Leads by a Wide Margin

Bar chart of cards graded in 2024: PSA 15.34 million, CGC 2.32 million, SGC 1.87 million and Beckett 657,000 Figure: Cards graded in 2024 by company (Sports Illustrated Collectibles).

According to Sports Illustrated Collectibles, in 2024:

  • PSA graded 15.34 million cards (9.10 million sports and 6.23 million TCG/non-sport),
  • CGC graded 2.32 million,
  • SGC graded 1.87 million,
  • Beckett graded 657,000.

PSA's volume gives it the deepest population data, the most sales history and the most buyers who default to its slabs. For many modern cards, the PSA 10 is the benchmark price that everything else is compared with.

Ownership changes worth knowing

  • Collectors, PSA's parent company, acquired SGC on February 29, 2024. SGC initially operated independently (SGC; Sports Illustrated). In 2025, Yahoo Sports reported that SGC would transition into a smaller "boutique" grading brand.
  • In April 2024, eBay announced it would acquire Goldin from Collectors, while PSA would acquire the eBay vault (eBay Inc.).

How Each Company Grades

PSA

  • Scale: 1–10 with half grades. The top grade is Gem Mint 10.
  • Gem Mint 10 centering: about 55/45 front, 75/25 back (PSA).
  • Subgrades: none on the label. You get a single overall grade, plus an autograph grade where applicable.
  • Strengths: liquidity, population depth and the biggest buyer base.

Full breakdown: PSA grading scale explained.

Beckett (BGS)

  • Scale: 1–10 in half points, with four subgrades: centering, corners, edges and surface.
  • Top tiers: Pristine 10, and the rarer Black Label, which requires 10/10/10/10 across all four subgrades (Beckett). A regular Pristine 10 can include a 9.5 subgrade.
  • Gem Mint 9.5 is a common high grade for modern cards.
  • Strengths: detailed subgrades and the Black Label premium, which matters most for ultra-modern and chromium cards.

Full breakdown: BGS Black Label explained.

SGC

  • Scale: 1–10 with two different 10s: 10 Pristine (10 PRI), which requires essentially 50/50 centering and a flawless card under magnification, and 10 Gem Mint (10 GM), which allows 55/45 centering and a slight print spot (SGC).
  • 9.5 Mint+ sits just below Gem Mint.
  • Strengths: a well-regarded holder design and a reputation in vintage cards. Always read the full label, because "10" alone does not tell you whether the card is Pristine or Gem Mint.

Record Sales in Each Holder

Real sales show that all three can hold the hobby's most valuable cards:

  • PSA: the record $12.932 million Jordan/Kobe Dual Logoman is a PSA 6 (Heritage, August 2025). The record 1986 Fleer Jordan, $840,000, was a PSA 10 (PWCC, July 2021).
  • BGS: the $5.2 million LeBron Exquisite RPA /23 is a BGS 9 (Reuters). The Kobe 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractor BGS 10 Black Label sold for $1,795,800 at Goldin in March 2021, and Beckett reported it was one of only two Black Label copies.
  • SGC: the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle that held the sports card record at $12.6 million before August 2025 was graded SGC 9.5 Mint+ (Heritage, 2022), as noted in coverage of the Jordan/Kobe sale.

Which Grader Should You Use?

Choose PSA if…

  • you want the most liquid result and the widest pool of buyers,
  • your card is a modern rookie where PSA 10 is the benchmark price,
  • you plan to sell soon.

Choose BGS if…

  • your card is a pristine chromium card with a real shot at a Black Label,
  • you own legacy ultra-premium cards (Exquisite, National Treasures, Flawless), where BGS slabs and subgrades are common and accepted,
  • you value detailed subgrade information.

Choose SGC if…

  • you collect vintage or prefer SGC's holder,
  • your card could earn a 10 Pristine,
  • you value SGC's pricing and turnaround (check the current rates on SGC's site).

Consider your exit

Whichever grader you pick, check recent sales for your exact card in each company's slab. The best grader for a given card is the one buyers pay the most for.

Practical Factors Beyond the Grade

Grading scales get the attention, but practical details often decide which company makes sense for a particular card.

  • Service level and declared value. All three companies price their services by tier, and high-value cards usually require higher tiers based on declared value. For a six- or seven-figure card, the fee is small next to the value, but insurance and shipping requirements become important.
  • Turnaround times. Wait times change with demand. During the 2021 boom, PSA's backlog was big enough that Yahoo Sports said it was affecting market supply. Check current published times before you submit.
  • Holder size for thick cards. Patch autos and Logomans are thick. Make sure the grader offers holders that fit the card without pressure.
  • Label information. Subgrades (BGS) and Pristine versus Gem Mint designations (SGC) give buyers more detail, which can help or hurt depending on the card.
  • Population report use. PSA's large database makes population analysis easier. With BGS and SGC, check each company's own population figures.

Crossovers and Regrades

Some collectors "cross" a card from one grader to another in search of a higher price, for example from BGS 9.5 to PSA 10. That carries risk. The new grader may give the same grade or a lower one, and every submission costs fees and shipping time. For legacy high-end slabs, many collectors leave the card in its original holder.

FAQ

Is PSA better than BGS?

PSA is more liquid and far larger. It graded 15.34 million cards in 2024, compared with Beckett's 657,000. BGS offers subgrades and the Black Label, which can command large premiums on pristine cards.

What is the difference between a BGS 10 and a Black Label?

A BGS Black Label requires perfect 10s in all four subgrades. A regular Pristine 10 can include a 9.5 subgrade.

What is SGC 10 Pristine?

SGC's top grade. It requires essentially perfect centering (about 50/50) and no visible flaws under magnification. SGC's 10 Gem Mint allows 55/45 centering.

Who owns SGC?

Collectors, PSA's parent company, acquired SGC on February 29, 2024.

Which grader is best for high-end basketball cards?

For liquidity on modern cards, PSA. For pristine chromium cards with a shot at a Black Label, BGS. For legacy Exquisite and Panini ultra-premium cards, both PSA and BGS are widely accepted.
