The Key Kobe Bryant Rookie Card: 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractor
Kobe's 1996-97 rookie year produced many cards, but the Topps Chrome Refractor #138 is the high-end benchmark.
- Record: on March 6, 2021, Goldin sold a BGS 10 Pristine Black Label copy for $1,795,800. Beckett reported that it was one of only two Black Label copies at the time.
- Why it matters: it combines Kobe's true rookie season, Topps Chrome refractor technology and a perfect grade. That made it the top example of a clean, unautographed Kobe rookie.
Our BGS Black Label guide explains how a Black Label is earned (four perfect 10 subgrades) and why it carries such a premium.
Kobe's Logoman Grails
2007-08 Exquisite Dual Logoman Auto with Michael Jordan 1/1: $12,932,000
On August 24, 2025, timed to "Mamba Day" (8/24), Heritage sold this card for $12.932 million. It is the most expensive sports card ever sold at public auction (Guinness, ESPN). The card is graded PSA 6, and it drew 82 bids. It features Jordan's gold logo patch from the 1996-97 season. Heritage's Chris Ivy called it "the finest modern basketball card in the world" (NBC Sports).
2007-08 Exquisite Dual Logoman Auto with LeBron James 1/1: $6,501,840
In September 2026, Alt sold this PSA 8 card for $6,501,840, including a 20% buyer's premium. Both patches are certified game-worn by Upper Deck. Kobe signed in blue marker, and LeBron added a "23" inscription. It had been in a private collection for nearly two decades (Sports Illustrated).
Panini Flawless Logoman Autographs: $2.3M and $1.7M
ESPN reported that collector Matt Allen privately bought two Kobe Flawless Logoman autos in August 2025: the 2015-16 card for $2.3 million and the 2017-18 card for $1.7 million. The $2.3 million price was the record for a Kobe card until the Jordan/Kobe sale.
Earlier Kobe/LeBron Logomans
Sports Illustrated cited Card Ladder data on other Kobe/LeBron Logoman sales: - 2006-07 Exquisite All NBA Access Jordan/Bryant/James Triple Logoman: $1.68 million (August 2022). - 2009 Kobe/LeBron Dual Logoman (PSA 6.5, auto 9): $1.16 million (June 2025). - 2004 Kobe/LeBron dual (slabbed Authentic): $840,000.
Why Kobe Cards Command a Premium
Upper Deck relationship
Kobe was an Upper Deck athlete during the Exquisite era, through about 2009 according to ESPN's reporting. That relationship produced on-card autographs and game-worn patches in Upper Deck's most premium products.
Scarcity of autographed material
Kobe died in January 2020, so no new Kobe autographs can ever be made. Every signed Kobe card belongs to a fixed supply.
Logoman history
Kobe appeared on the very first Logoman checklist, 2002-03 Upper Deck NBA Logo Mania, alongside Michael Jordan and Jay Williams (Sotheby's). See What Is a Logoman Card?
A global fan base
"Mamba Day" timing and the bidding on the Jordan/Kobe card show how deep the demand is.
Kobe Rookie Cards by Tier
Entry tier
Base 1996-97 rookies in mid grades offer access to Kobe's rookie year at modest prices. Supply is deep, so check the population before paying for high grades.
Upper tier
Topps Chrome base rookies and other premium 1996-97 issues in PSA 10 or BGS 9.5. Grade and centering drive price.
Blue-chip tier
The Topps Chrome Refractor in high grades, especially BGS 10 or Black Label, is Kobe's flagship unsigned rookie.
Grail tier
Exquisite dual and triple Logomans and Flawless Logoman autos trade privately or at flagship auctions for seven or eight figures.
Grading Considerations for Kobe Rookies
Kobe's 1996-97 rookies are now nearly 30 years old, and condition problems are common.
- Chromium surfaces: Topps Chrome and Refractor cards from the 1990s often have surface scratches, print lines and refractor "haze." Inspect them under angled light.
- Centering: many 1990s chromium cards were cut off-center. Perfect centering is essential for a BGS 10 or Black Label, and it carries a premium even at PSA 10.
- Edges: dark borders and chrome edges show chipping clearly.
- Grader choice: the Black Label benchmark comes from Beckett, so BGS has particular appeal for pristine Kobe Chrome Refractors. For liquidity, PSA 10s trade more often.

Buying Kobe Cards Safely
- Verify the cert and compare it with the grader's images.
- Check the autograph authentication on any signed card.
- Read the patch description on memorabilia cards.
- Use comps for the same grade and grader. A BGS Black Label and a PSA 10 are separate markets.
- Weigh provenance on 1/1s.

Kobe vs Jordan vs LeBron
Jordan's cards hold the very top price ($12.932 million with Kobe). LeBron has the most million-dollar cards. Kobe's record sales almost all involve those two players: his top three-player and two-player Logomans feature Jordan or LeBron. For context, see our LeBron rookie card guide, our Exquisite Collection guide and the most expensive basketball cards.
How Kobe's Market Has Evolved
Kobe's top prices have risen in steps. In March 2021, the Topps Chrome Refractor Black Label set a benchmark at about $1.8 million. In August 2022, a Jordan/Bryant/James Triple Logoman brought $1.68 million. In June 2025, a 2009 Kobe/LeBron dual sold for $1.16 million. In August 2025, Kobe-only Flawless Logomans reached $2.3 million privately, and days later the Jordan/Kobe dual sold for $12.932 million. In September 2026, the Kobe/LeBron dual added $6.5 million. Each sale raised expectations for the next, especially for unique, autographed Logomans. Collectors should remember that these are separate one-off events, not a smooth index. The prices reflect specific cards, specific buyers and specific moments.
