1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card Value Guide

What is a 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card worth? Record PSA 10 sales, population data, price history and buying tips, all from verified sources.

The 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 is the card that defines the modern basketball hobby. It is not the rarest Jordan card and not the most expensive, but it is the one almost everyone knows. When people search for "1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card value," they usually want three answers: what it sells for, why grade matters so much, and whether today's price makes sense.

This guide covers all three, using only documented sales and population figures. The short answer is that value depends almost entirely on condition and authenticity. A PSA 10 has sold for as much as $840,000, while lower-grade copies trade in the low thousands.

Why the 1986 Fleer Jordan Matters

A set that filled a gap

Yahoo Sports' history of the set explains why it carries so much weight. Topps issued a final basketball run for 1981-82 and then left the sport, and no mainstream company made NBA cards again until Fleer returned in 1986. That gap meant the 132-card 1986 Fleer set served as the first major card for many established stars. It includes 12 future Hall of Famers, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone and Isiah Thomas among them, and Jordan is the headliner.

Jordan's first-year cards are not all Fleer. The 1984-85 Star Company issued four Jordan cards with a small print run, but Yahoo reported that PSA refuses to grade them because so many have been forged. That leaves the Fleer #57 as the accepted mainstream rookie, and it is the card collectors benchmark.

Built to be hard to grade

The Fleer design is unforgiving. Its red, white and blue borders chip easily, the card stock is soft and miscuts are common. A card that looked clean coming out of the pack in 1986 rarely stays that way after decades of handling.

1986 Fleer Jordan PSA 10 Price History

The PSA 10 has gone through one of the most dramatic price cycles in collecting history. The chart below plots reported sale prices and price levels quoted in the financial and sports press.

Bar chart of reported 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 10 sale prices from about $8,000 around 2011 to a record $840,000 in July 2021 and about $217,000 in early 2025 Figure 1: Reported PSA 10 prices. Grey bars are approximate levels quoted in press coverage; the red bar is the record sale.

The run-up (2011–2020)

  • Around 2011: a PSA 10 at auction cost roughly $8,000, according to Yahoo Sports.
  • 2016: Forbes reported a PSA 10 selling for under $24,000.
  • End of 2019: prices had reached about $40,000 (Yahoo).
  • Mid-April 2020: after ESPN's The Last Dance aired, a PSA 10 set a then-record of $51,600 (Forbes).
  • December 2020: a PSA 10 sold on eBay for $200,000, exactly one month before the Goldin sale that followed (Yahoo).

The peak (2021)

  • January 2021: two PSA 10s sold at Goldin for $738,000 each (Forbes).
  • Late May 2021: two Goldin PSA 10s sold for $344,400 and $288,000, less than half the January peak (Yahoo, June 3, 2021).
  • July 2021: PWCC sold a PSA 10 for a record $840,000. The buyer said he paid up because, in his view, some 10s are better-looking than others (Auction Report).

After the peak

PSA's Auction Prices Realized page for the card showed a most-recent PSA 10 price of $217,294.80 in a snapshot with sales listed through early 2025. That is still well above anything paid before 2020, but about 74% below the 2021 record. Check the live APR page before you make a decision, because this figure will change.

How Many PSA 10 Jordans Exist?

Population data shows how scarce gem-mint copies really are.

  • In June 2021, PSA had graded 19,567 Jordan rookies, and 317 of them received a 10, a gem rate of about 1.6% (Yahoo).
  • By September 2023, Sports Collectors Digest counted 320 PSA 10s from more than 23,000 submissions.
  • The PSA APR snapshot cited above listed a PSA 10 population of 326.

Thousands more cards were submitted over those two-plus years, but only a handful reached a 10. For a full walkthrough of these numbers, see our guide on how to read a PSA pop report.

What Drives Value Grade by Grade

Grade is everything

PSA's standard for a Gem Mint 10 calls for four sharp corners, full original gloss and centering within about 55/45 on the front. On a card famous for off-center printing and chipped borders, few copies qualify. Sports Collectors Digest noted that even PSA 1 copies can bring about $2,000, which tells you that demand runs all the way down the grading scale. To see what each grade means, read our PSA grading scale explainer.

Eye appeal inside a grade

The July 2021 record buyer's comment matters. Two cards can share a grade and still sell for different prices. A sharply centered 10 with strong color can beat a 10 that just made the cut.

Market cycles

The 2020–2021 run was driven by pandemic-era demand, The Last Dance, and grading backlogs that kept supply off the market. When those conditions eased, prices fell back. We look at this pattern across other cards in investing in basketball cards.

The Fleer Rookie vs Jordan's Highest-Priced Cards

The Fleer rookie is the icon, but it is not Jordan's top card. In October 2021, Goldin sold a 1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jersey Michael Jordan autograph numbered 6/23 for $2.7 million, then a record for any Jordan item (Chicago Sun-Times). Basketball Card Insider's sales tracker also lists a $4.25 million private sale of another copy of that /23 card, graded PSA 6 with a 9 autograph, which Goldin announced in April 2026. In February 2019, PWCC sold a 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green Jordan, one of only 10 green examples, for $350,100 (Beckett). Jordan's highest-priced cards are now multi-player Logomans, which we cover in the most expensive basketball cards ever sold.

Buying Tips for a 1986 Fleer Jordan

  1. Buy graded. Yahoo reported that collectors consider the Fleer Jordan one of the most counterfeited cards in the hobby. Stick to PSA, BGS or SGC slabs and verify the cert number. Our fake graded card guide explains how.
  2. Compare the same grade only. A PSA 8 comp tells you little about a PSA 9.
  3. Look at the card, not just the label. Centering and color vary a great deal inside each grade.
  4. Expect volatility. The PSA 10 fell by more than half within months of its January 2021 peak.
  5. Use realized prices, not asking prices. PSA's APR and auction archives show what buyers actually paid.

FAQ

How much is a 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card worth?

It depends on grade. The record PSA 10 sale is $840,000 (PWCC, July 2021). PSA's APR snapshot showed a recent PSA 10 at about $217,000, and lower grades sell for far less. Always check current realized sales for the exact grade.

How many 1986 Fleer Jordan PSA 10s are there?

Snapshots show 317 (June 2021), 320 (September 2023) and 326 on a later PSA APR page. That is roughly 1–2% of submissions.

Is the 1986 Fleer Jordan his true rookie card?

It is his first mainstream, widely accepted rookie card. The 1984-85 Star Company cards came earlier, but PSA does not grade them because of forgery concerns.

Why did the Jordan rookie spike in 2020–2021?

Press coverage points to The Last Dance documentary, pandemic-era collecting demand and a PSA grading backlog that limited fresh supply.

What is Michael Jordan's most expensive card?

His most expensive card is the 2007-08 Exquisite Dual Logoman with Kobe Bryant, which sold for $12.932 million in 2025. Among his solo cards, the 1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jersey autograph /23 leads the way. One copy sold for $2.7 million in 2021, and another was reported at $4.25 million in a private sale in 2026.
